Keeping Sane Through Books

Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,
My pile of books is a mile high.
How I love them! How I need them!
I'll have a long beard by the time I read them.

In Defense of Food - Michael Pollan
“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”
So I know I’ve mentioned I’ve been reading Steinbeck’s East of Eden and I still am but my first-year seminar here at college is all about food and how it influences life and culture and all that jazz. Well this is our second book by Michael Pollan (after The Omnivore’s Dilemma which we didn’t read the last part of so I plan to finish that in the near future) and I have to stay that he completely blows my mind. This is a rather quick read, I read parts II and III yesterday and today and part I also only took me a day. And that included making up discussion questions for class.
Pollan wrote this in response to The Omnivore’s Dilemma in order to answer the question “Well, now what do we eat?” The third section probably most fulfills this answer (although the first two sections are really interesting as well) by going through Pollan’s “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Pollan’s voice isn’t boring or droning so it’s interesting to read about stuff that otherwise you may have passed up.
