Keeping Sane Through Books
Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,
My pile of books is a mile high.
How I love them! How I need them!
I'll have a long beard by the time I read them.
-Arnold Lobel
East of Eden - John Steinbeck
601 pages…whew. Steinbeck wrote a lot but I think this was easier to get through than Of Mice and Men or Travels with Charley, my only other Steinbeck knowledge.
What I have to say about this book is that it is strange. Not in a bad way. But to think about how much thought Steinbeck put into creating this book is just appalling. Everything works out in religious parallel but not to the point that you get annoyed/bored with it. The entire book astounded me.
That being said it was enjoyable, and probably would have taken me less time if finals and the end of my freshman year of college hadn’t been sitting in the way. At the same time it wasn’t a book I couldn’t put down. It was nice to read as I read it but if I was tired or felt the need to watch t.v. or something, I could put this book down. Which I guess boded well for my finals. But now that summer’s here I’m definitely on the look out for something I can’t put down.
